Looking for a last-minute Halloween treat, maybe one you can make together with the kids?

Then mummy cookies are the smartest answer. I will show you how a pack of butter cookies, a bar of white chocolate and a few candy eyes are all it takes to turn out a platter of little mummies in under twenty minutes.

The secret of this recipe is that there is nothing to bake: the cookies are ready-made, the white chocolate is the coating and the zig-zag lines piped on top become the bandages. The messier they are, the better the effect.

It has at least three advantages: it is incredibly quick, you do not need the oven, and kids can take care of almost everything, from the eyes to the bandages. On top of that, you can find every ingredient in any supermarket.

The one thing to watch is the white chocolate, which is more delicate than dark chocolate. Melt it gently or in the microwave in short bursts, stirring often: if it overheats it turns grainy and will no longer pipe.

Once they are done, the mummies keep in a box in a cool place for a couple of days. They also make a lovely gift wrapped in a clear cellophane bag.

Ready? Let’s get started on these white chocolate mummy cookies.

Steps

  1. Chop the white chocolate and melt it over a pan of barely simmering water, or in the microwave in short 20-second bursts, stirring each time.
  2. Set aside a couple of tablespoons of the melted chocolate for the bandages.
  3. Dip the cookies one at a time in the chocolate, let the excess drip off by tapping them gently on the edge of the bowl and lay them on a sheet of parchment.
  4. Press two candy eyes onto the top of each cookie straight away, while the chocolate is still soft.
  5. Spoon the reserved chocolate into a parchment piping cone, snip off the tip and pipe zig-zag lines over the cookies, leaving the eyes uncovered.
  6. Let them set in the fridge for 15 minutes before serving.

Helpful tips

White chocolate burns easily: in the microwave use medium power and stir often.

If the melted chocolate is too thick to pipe the bandages, stir in a teaspoon of sunflower oil.

You can also use chocolate cookies: the white bandages will stand out even more.
